Greece tops Second-hand Ship Purchases
Greeks were the biggest buyers of second-hand ships in 2020.
Seatrade Maritime News reports that Greek shipowners were the leading buyers of second-hand ships in 2020, spending 3.6 billion USD to acquire them, on which they made 2.55 billion USD in profits.
In all, they purchased 233 ships in 2020. This was followed by the Chinese, who bought 179 ships, spending 2.71 billion USD. Noteworthily, many of these Chinese acquisitions were from Greek sellers.
As far as sales numbers go, Greeks sold a total of 175 ships. They were closely followed by the Japanese who sold 161 ships, reaping 2.14 billion USD.
Overall, Greek and Chinese buyers dominated second-hand ship purchases globally, buying more than double the number of ships bought by the next eight countries/regions on the list – Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Germany, Norway, the Middle East, Switzerland, and India.
