Forty feared dead off Canary Islands after lone survivor found clinging to dinghy
Mass fatality suspected after woman rescued from capsized boat.
An estimated 40 migrants are feared dead after a woman was rescued from waters off the Canary Islands.
The lone survivor was found clinging to an upturned boat “in a bad state” and severely dehydrated, said the Guardian. Two bodies were found beside her.
The unnamed woman told her rescuers she had begun the crossing from the African continent with “about 40 people”.
The coastguard was alerted by another vessel that spotted the woman approximately 135 miles from the Spanish archipelago. Weather conditions were reported to be bad at the time.
