Hutchinson Ports has announced that the UK’s Port of Felixstowe will be the first of the nation’s havens to use 5G technology and the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT). It is hoped the new tech will increase productivity, efficiency and safety across the port’s operations.

Three UK will instal the new network — part of the government’s Trails and Testbeds Programme. A collaboration between government, industry and Cambridge University, the programme will test 5G’s potential to manage remote-controlled crane operations, and the deployment of the IoT to optimise predictive maintenance of Felixstowe’s 31 quay-side and 82 yard-cranes.

Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer Hutchison Ports UK, added: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting 5G Create programme. Being the largest UK port to introduce 5G technology will allow the Port of Felixstowe to deploy innovative technologies to boost efficiency and improve safety for our workforce…”
