A barge has sunk off the Indian city of Mumbai during a severe cyclone. The Indian navy said it had rescued 177 of the 270 people aboard and that search and rescue efforts to find other survivors are ongoing.

The barge was carrying offshore drilling personnel employed by India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. The force of the storm caused the barge to drag her anchors and begin drifting.

700 people aboard three other commercial barges are also stranded at sea following Cyclone Tauktae which has pummelled India’s west coast.

The storm has weakened since yesterday, but has claimed the lives of at least 12 people. Initially classified as “extremely severe”, the cyclone made landfall in Gujarat state late on Monday with wind speeds of up to 160km/h (100mph).
