Danish-Canadian consortium to develop carbon-neutral vessels
Danish shipping company, MHO-Co, is heading up a consortium that will invest €4.5m in developing carbon-neutral propulsion technologies.
A consortium that includes Danish company MHO-Co, Denmark’s Aalborg University, Canadian partner Sterling PlanB Energy Solutions, Danfoss, Ballard Power Systems Europe, and Stuart Friezer Marine will test fuel cells and new liquid cooled battery technology on two of MHO-Co’s hybrid vessels.
In all, a total of €4.5m will be spent on the project, including a grant of €2.15 from the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program.
The new tech will be trialled aboard two new crewboats currently being built for MHO-Co in China. The new vessels are scheduled to enter service with MHO-Co in the summer of 2021.
“The aim is to develop environmentally-friendly technology to replace fossil fuels and dominate the maritime industry in the future. With the EUDP grants as well as with knowledge and innovation from other participants, we will set new standards for what is possible in the maritime industry” said MHO-Co’s director, Mik Henriksen.
