17
More than 380 were rescued by the coastguard while at least 17 migrants drowned in a disaster off Tunisia attempting to reach Italy from Libya, according to a report from the Tunisian Red Crescent.
It was reported that the boat left from Zuwara in Libya’s northwest, with Syrian, Egyptian, Sudanese, Eritrean, Malian, and Bangladeshi migrants aboard.
Several people have drowned recently in the waters of Tunisia, which has grown in recent months in terms of the number of people attempting to make the trip to Europe. Many of them, fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, have risked their lives by making the Mediterranean passage in recent years.
