Report: No action taken on Alaska cruise industry recovery bill

WASHINGTON — Cruise Industry News reports that no action on the proposed Alaska Tourism Recovery Act has been taken.
Maritime Direct reported recently on the proposal of the Alaska Tourism Recovery Act, which was proposed by the Congressional delegation from Alaska to address the Canadian cruise ban that was extended by a year to curtail the latest strands of COVID-19.
Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan and Rep. Don Young, all Republicans, have introduced the Alaska Tourism Recovery Act.
“There is not currently a vote scheduled in the U.S. Senate for the Alaska Tourism Recovery Act,” said Hannah Ray, press secretary for U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, in a statement sent to Cruise Industry News. The proposed act alleviates the Passenger Vessel Services Act’s restrictions for cruise ships transporting passengers between Alaska and Washington.
Omar Alghabra, the Canadian Minister of Transport, announced a renewed no-sail ban for cruise ships on February 4.
Note, the Canadian government implemented a comprehensive ban on cruise vessels during the 2020-2021 operational year. However, due to the country’s concerns over various new strains of COVID-19, the same ban was renewed for another year.
