JUNEAU — According to local news reports, eleven residents of the city of Juneau (Alaska’s capital city) have filed affidavits for three proposed ballot initiatives to allow residents to limit the town’s cruise ship business.
“I’m a big believer in direct democracy, and this is a chance for us to say if we think that there are too many people coming on cruise ships to Juneau,” said Karla Hart, a spokesperson for the activists, in a report by KTOO Public Media, via the Anchorage Daily News.
“And to say if we think that people in Juneau want to have evenings quiet and for ourselves in the community and people who are staying over. And whether we want Saturdays for ourselves in the community and for people staying over,” Hart said.
The Juneau City Clerk received the affidavits on April 12.
These filings are meant to coincide with the city’s regular October election.
