Greece seeks extension to territorial waters
Following negotiations with Italy and Albania, the Greek government has submitted a bill to parliament that seeks to extend the country’s territorial limit in the Ionian Sea from six to 12 miles.
A new Greek bill to extend Greece’s territorial waters in the Ionian was submitted on Friday, Reuters reports. If approved it will extend Greece’s western maritime border, but will not affect waters in the Aegean, where the Athens government has been in dispute with her neighbour and fellow NATO-member, Turkey.
Greece and Italy have agreed to the bill, but some details still need to be finalised with the Albanian government in Tirana. Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Misotakis met the Albanian premier Edi Rama in Athens on Friday.
Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias, said: “This draft legislation confirms Greece’s strategy of seeking agreements with neighbouring countries, based always on international law and promoting security and prosperity in the region.”
