Details of ShipFC’s project to install an ammonium-powered fuel cell on an operating vessel have been released in a press announcement by the FCH. The project has been given a boost by an EU grant and is part of a consortium of 14 European companies and institutions with plans to fit the system in an offshore vessel by 2023.

The Norwegian cluster, NCE Maritime Clean Tech, is leading the ShipFC project and has been awarded the $12m grant with the aim of a developing a shipboard power source that can deliver safe, effective electric power for propulsion and all onboard systems.

The partners plan to scale up a 100-kilowatt fuel cell to deliver 2 megawatts of power and intend to fit the system aboard the Viking Energy. With the retrofit, the vessel will be able to operate on clean fuel for 3,000 hours per year and the trial could pave the way for long-range zero-emission voyages in the very near future.
