Samsung Heavy to diversify into renewables
South Korean shipyard receives approval-in-principle (AiP) from DNV for large offshore wind floater model.
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has its eye on the renewables energy sector and has disclosed that it has received AiP from DNV GL for a 9.5 MW large-scale offshore wind floater it call the Tri-Star Float.
SHI is specifically targeting the South Korean government-led Donghae-1 floating wind farm project which is being developed by Equinor, Korea National Oil Corporation, and Korea East-West Power.
The three-legged design is a departure from more usual four-legged designs — the company says it is using three legs in order to speed up construction and installation, and to create a more compact design.
“The offshore floater will enable us to make forays into the renewable energy sector using our capacity to build large-scale offshore plants,” said SHI vice president of offshore business division Wang K Lee.
“We hope our development is aligned with the government’s Green New Deal Policy,” he added.
