Blockchain technology will be used to modernize the Port of Buenos Aires in Argentina in order to boost the port’s efficiency.

According to a press statement on Friday, the General Port Administration (GPA) has announced a tender to update its maritime logistics platform.  The platform known as e-PuertoBUE has responsibilities that include shipment lines, fleet maintenance, and customs coordination. It will partially use physical documentation to handle activities as well.

A “digital notary” is what blockchain implementation does: it acts as a digital witness that prevents modifications of information and provides a secure framework.  When specifically considered, blockchain will be used to support shipping process paperwork such as delivery information, electronic consignment notes, and dangerous goods declarations.

Blockchain has been being used for maritime processes in shipping industries already. Key shipping and port operators began to implement the technology throughout 2020 to boost transparency and speed up various supply chain operations.
