China Deals Heavy Blow to Indian Sea Labor
Indian Sailors Losing Jobs, China to Blame
The Chinese have placed an unofficial ban and have prevented ships containing Indian crew members from docking at Chinese ports, which, according to the seafarer workers’ union organization, has led to an overall reduction in Indian seagoing labor.
As a result of China’s recent prohibition on Indian seafarers entering its waters, over 21,000 sailors in India face employment losses, both directly and indirectly.
Due to China’s decision, shipping corporations located in the United States, the United Kingdom, and western Europe whose boats are heading for China have ceased to hire Indian crew members. Many of such companies have in reality started accepting a greater number of Filipinos, Vietnamese, and Chinese nationals instead.
