200+ Ships Sold for Scrap in 2021
Ship Scrap Sales Increase in Asia
The NGO Shipbreaking Platform reported on the ship scrapping industry in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
In the second quarter of 2021, 258 ships were damaged or broken to some degree. According to these figures, a total of 197 ships were sold to the beaches of South Asia, where there are known hazardous conditions putting both employees and the environment at risk. Ship owners from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) sold the most vessels, which was followed by ship owners from Greece, Singapore, and South Korea.
Due to their poor implementation of international maritime law, black-listed middlemen that purchase vessels from shipowners are especially popular with this demographic as they pay for vessels in cash.
