Singapore Strait is Number One Area for Vessel Robberies in Asia
Over Half of All Piracy Events in Asia Occurred in Singapore Strait in 2021
ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) just released its report for 2021 in regards to armed robberies and piracy incidents aboard vessels in Asia and Singapore Straits holds the record for over half of the attempts.
82 incidents were recorded in all of 2021 with the Singapore Straits accounting for 49 of those robbery, piracy attempts.
Masafumi Kuroki, Executive Director of ReCAAP ISC stated, “We have recommended to strengthen their [Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia] coordination, and also to respond promptly to incidents reported by ships and arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators because the arrest of the perpetrators is a very importance deterrence.”
