Japan Tests “World’s First” Autonomous Containership Sea Trial
Sea Trial Completed by Japan for Autonomous Containership
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines completed a sea trial on January 24-25th to test for the first time the use of an autonomous containership.
Operated by Imoto Lines, the Japanese shipping company took to use the 2015-built feeder containership M/V Mikage and had it voyage from Tsuruga Port in Japan’s Fukui Prefecture to Sakai Port in Tottori Prefecture conducting autonomous berthing and unbearting.
The trial was completed with the help of an autonomous operating control system for the ship provided by Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding. The operating system tracks weather, tides and other information.
