In a press release today, Bureau Veritas has announced the successful completion of a remote underwater survey using an underwater drone using Seasam technology from Notilo Plus. The ship surveyed was the Corsica Linea vessel, the Mediterranee.

The trial opens the way for remote inspections to become routine, reducing the need for ships to have docking surveys. The Seasam drone uses a sophisticated system of sensors and is controlled by Notilo Plus software.

Bureau Veritas sees many benefits to the system, including less need for divers in the water, a reduction in disruption to ship operations, higher quality pictures due to the stability of the drone, ease of deployment – only one operator is needed, and ease of collaboration online.

Laurent Leblanc, Senior Vice President of Technical & Operations at Bureau Veritas, said: “Underwater remote surveys can improve safety, reduce risk, time and expenses to provide better results. Maintaining the integrity and safety of a ship is a huge task. This new underwater technology brings digital classification to another level providing new opportunities to both our clients and to BV.”
