Video: Mud volcano erupts in Caspian Sea
Geyser of fire shoots into the sky 45nm south of Baku, Azerbaijan.
A towering jet of flame in the Caspian Sea that was witnessed by people 45nm away in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, was caused by a mud volcano. The natural phenomenon is endemic to the region, which has roughly half the world’s mud volcanos.
The eruption has been localised to the island of Dashly, an uninhabited outcrop in the Baku Archipelago.
According to Dr Mark Tingray of the University of Adelaide, mud volcanos can either be caused by geothermal heat or high pressure sedimentary rock containing large quantities of methane.
The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) said in a statement that none of its offshore installations were harmed.
