Iron Plate Strikes Worker Causing Death at Shipbreaking Yard
Shipbreaking yards in Bangladesh have a reputation for hazardous working conditions and unsafe occupational safety measures in place according to rights activists which has resulted in many recorded deaths of workers yet they continue to be in service.
On December 2 while working at NB Shipyard in Sitakunda of Chittagong, sources reported a 38 year old worker was hit in the head by an iron plate resulting in serious injuries which caused him to be rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he was pronounced deceased.
Only 1 of the 60-70 shipbreaking and recycling yards in the Chittagong area of Sitakunda obtain a green badge.
