Maritime industry stands together on piracy in the GoG
Almost 100 carriers, organisations and flag states have joined forces and released a joint statement aimed at reducing the number of piracy incidents in the Gulf of Guinea.
A joint declaration by shipping organisation BIMCO and Danish Shipping has been released today, with the aim of reducing the number of pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea. Co-signatories include A.P. Møller-Maersk, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd.
Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping said: “Whether you represent a shipping company, are a customer, an authority or anything else connected with shipping in the Gulf of Guinea, I would encourage you to support this declaration.
“We must create the greatest possible awareness of the problems in the Gulf of Guinea in order to create the greatest possible safety for our seafarers. We owe it to them.”
The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) has recorded 130 kidnappings in the GoG in 2020 and says it is the highest number it has ever seen in the region.
BIMCO estimates that two frigates and one helicopter would be sufficient to patrol the area.
