Oil development off Shetland should not go ahead says UK Labour leader
Leader of the opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, says plans to tap a new oil field off the Shetland Islands “give off completely the wrong signal”.
Labour leader Keir Starmer says plans to open up a new oil field off the Shetland Islands should not be approved as Scotland is set to host the COP26 climate conference and “give off completely the wrong signal”.
The plans by UK authorities to allow drilling at the huge Cambo oil field took the Prime Minister Boris Johnson by surprise when he was quizzed about the plan on BBC Scotland.
He said he was not aware of the development, but when pressed said contracts should not be “ripped up” and that the UK should “…transition as fast as we reasonable can” to renewable energy sources.
The Cambo field is situated about 125km (75 miles) to the west of Shetland, and contains over 800m barrels of oil.
