Video: Greek divers recover bag of cocaine from bulker hull
Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG) releases footage of divers as they discover a bag of cocaine within the hull of a bulker.
Greek authorities have released a video showing a dive team uncovering illicit drugs hidden within the hull of 24,100-dwt bulker, Skyros, at anchor in Kalamaki.
The footage shows a sea-chest grill being opened under the vessel and a large black bag being removed. 46.7kg of cocaine was found inside. Lydia Mar, the vessel’s operators, say it is the victim of criminal activity.
Authorities in Brazil acted on a tip off when the vessel was in Santarem and found two bags of narcotics, but suspected a third was hidden on the vessel. The ship was then cleared to leave for Greece.
Alerted by Brazilian authorities, the HCG then ordered the underwater inspection that found the third bag.
A Lydia Mar spokesman said the crew of 23 were being interviewed by police as part of normal procedures.
