High-tech cable layer delivered to Prysmian
Energy and telecoms specialist takes delivery of “record breaking” cable laying vessel, Leonardo da Vinci.
Prysmian Group has taken delivery of its new cable-laying vessel, the Leonardo da Vinci. The new ship’s first task will be the installation of the world’s longest power interconnection, the Viking Link submarine cable between Denmark and the UK.
The vessel was built by Fincantieri subsidiaries Vard Group in Vard Tulcea, Romania and Brattvåg, Norway. She has a length of 170 metres and a beam of 34 metres and is fitted with deep-water installation equipment for depths of more than 3,000 metres.
Her maximum speed is 16 knots and she carries two carousels of 7,000 and 10,000 tonnes. All cable handling and installation equipment has been designed by Prysmian.
“Leonardo da Vinci is the most efficient cable layer in the world and from now onwards it will support the group’s long-term growth in the submarine cable installation business. It will be a game changer in strengthening our leadership in the interconnection and offshore wind farm markets,” stated Valerio Battista, CEO, Prysmian Group.
