The German container line, Hapag-Lloyd has recruited 77 young cadets as it sets its eyes on the future amid booming freight markets. The Hamburg-based company said some of the cadets will learn the traditional nautical professions, while some will become shore staff.

13 of the trainees will become ships’ mechanics, 15 will become assistant deck officers, and one a technical officer’s assistant. Another 21 will enter shore-based roles such as shipping clerks. The company said 14 ship mechanics are already on their first voyage aboard the 8,600-teu Chicago Express.

“We are proud to welcome so many great young people to Hapag-Lloyd again,” said Joachim Schlotfeldt, chief personnel and global procurement officer of Hapag-Lloyd. “Supporting future generations as they enter the workforce is part of our understanding of sustainability,” he added.
