Video: Four tonnes of cannabis seized from Piraeus shipping container
Narcotics smugglers continue to target eastern Mediterranean ports.
Greek authorities have made a large seizure of cannabis from a shipping container in the Port of Piraeus. The find comes just days after Croatian authorities reported one of their largest seizures of cocaine and analysts believe smugglers are using eastern routes in an effort to avoid stricter controls in Western European ports.
Greece’s Drug Prosecution Department of the Economic Crimes Department (SDOE) said the haul has a street value of approximately $40m.
The SDOE acted on information provided by the US Drug Enforcement Agency and in cooperation with the General Directorate of Drug Prosecution of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
No arrests have been made so far and the Greek authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
