Singapore to create electric-vessel supply chain
Port of Singapore seeks to develop blue-print for decarbonising harbour operations.
In a ground-breaking move, a coalition of companies, research institutes, public authorities, and a classification society have announced plans to create Singapore’s first-ever electric-vessel supply chain.
Led by Keppel Offshore & Marine, the effort hopes to become a decarbonisation blue-print that other ports and harbours can emulate.
Approximately 1,600 diesel-powered craft currently operate in the Port of Singapore and studies indicate electrification would have a significant impact on carbon emissions.
The first step towards electrification will be the construction by Keppel of a 30-pax passenger ferry.
“Electrification has the potential to accelerate the decarbonization of our local harbor craft industry, so we are pleased to support the joint industry-research consortium led by Keppel in their electric vessel project,” said Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
“This is one of the three consortiums comprising 30 enterprises and research institutions across the value chain that we are supporting under the Maritime GreenFuture Fund.”
