Two dead after Carnival ship recycling accident
Explosion aboard a Carnival ship being dismantled at the Metas yard in Turkey kills two.
Two men have died in an explosion while working at the Aliaga Metas Ship Breaking Yard in Turkey. 55-year-old Yilmaz Demir and 30-year-old Olguz Taskin were caught in an engine room fire while dismantling the 70,400-gt Carnival Inspiration.
The 1996-built Inspiration was bought by Turkey’s Ege Celik group which is approved for ship recycling by the European Union’s Ship Recycling Regulation (SRR). However, due to congestion, the ship was moved to the group’s Metas facility in Aliaga, which is not EU approved.
“After the necessary investigations regarding the accident are completed, a detailed explanation will be shared with the public,” the yard said in local press reports.”
