Rescuers found more than 33 survivors from a migrant boat clinging to an oil platform after their boat sank off the southern coast of Tunisia. Over 50 are still missing, Tunisia’s defence ministry says.

“There are 33 survivors, all apparently from Bangladesh,” Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), told AFP. “At least 50 are missing.”

The boat left the Libyan port of Zuwara on Sunday, crammed with over 90 passengers. According to the United Nations, at least 1,200 migrants died in the Mediterranean last year, most of them crossing its central region. At least 500 have died this year alone.
