Doun Kisen wood-chip carrier goes aground at the port of Hachinohe
The 49,548-dwt wood-chip carrier, Crimson Polaris, has suffered serious damage after going aground at the port Hachinohe in north west Japan.
According to the Japanese coastguard, the ship initially grounded in heavy weather and was re-floated under her own power, but suffered a significant crack in her hull. She is currently at anchor and not in danger of sinking.
All the 21 crew aboard are safe and no injuries or pollution have been reported.
The 2006-built vessel is owned by Mi-Das Line, a subsidiary of Imabari-based shipping line, Doun Kisen. She is laden with a 44,000-tonne cargo of woodchip from Thailand at the time of the accident.
