Fire at Jebel Ali Port brought under control in 44 minutes says minister
“Robust response” prevented Ocean Trader fire from becoming a major disaster.
Emirati authorities have revealed that the fire that broke out aboard the 210-teu container vessel, Ocean Trader, on Wednesday was brought under control in just 44 minutes.
Dubai’s main port, Jebel Ali, was rocked by an explosion just after midnight and His Excellency Suhail Al Mazrouei, the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said a swift and “robust reponse” by fire crews was responsible for averting a major incident and preventing significant disruption to port operations.
“The evacuation procedure of the ship’s crew and workers on the berth was carried out promptly. While containing the fire and ensuring no fatalities, the rescue team also took the necessary safety measures to ensure that there were no radioactive materials on the ship,” he said.
“This robust response comes as a result of years of pro-active planned preparation in developing world-class infrastructure in the ports and marine facilities in the UAE…”
