Newhaven RNLI and Coastguard helicopter evacuate student from the deck of the sail-training vessel, Pelican of London after HMCG receives mayday call.
In a joint operation, the RNLI and HM Coastguard have evacuated a student from the 1940s-built tall-ship, Pelican of London.
A trainee crew with a compromised airway was airlifted from the deck of the square-rigged training ship approx. 15nm SW of Newhaven Harbour in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The victim was delivered directly to Brighton General Hospital.
“The Pelican was heading to Poole avoiding the worst of the storms as she set off with some new trainee crew who had joined in Folkestone,” said Adrian Ragbourne, the CEO of tall ship operator Seas Your Future.
“One of the new crew was taken ill in the early hours, and his condition deteriorated such that at just before 0500 it was assessed that his life was in danger and the decision was made to medevac immediately.”
