Eight 80,000-dwt bulkers ordered by CDB Leasing
China Development Bank Financial Leasing (CDB Leasing) has ordered a series of eight 80,000-dwt bulkers from a Chinese state-owned shipbuilder.
The Hong-Kong listed company, CDB Leasing, has ordered eight 80,000-dwt bulkers from Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry yard in Yangzhou, China.
CDB said it was paying $221.6m for the ships, or $27.7m per vessel. Delivery dates for the newbuildings have not been disclosed.
The company told its shareholders that it would fund the new acquisitions through a combination of its own funds and commercial bank loans.
Industry insiders describe the order as being consistent with CDB’s strategy to increase its market share in the dry-bulk sector.
UK shipbroker Affinity said the interest in dry bulk was “easy to understand”.
“Not only do we have a freight market which is very profitable for owners but we also have an orderbook, which in spite of recent industrial ordering, remains historically very low,” it said.
