Video: Coastal chemical spill in Durban investigated by authorities
South African authorities in the port city of Durban have reported a coastal chemical spill likely to have been caused by a warehouse fire following unrest this week.
Authorities in Durban, South Africa are investigating the source of a chemical spill that has affected beaches and lagoons in the eThekwini municipality.
It is thought the pollution has come from a warehouse that was torched during violence following the arrest of the country’s former president, Jacob Zuma.
“Extensive environmental impacts are being reported at uMhlanga and uMdhloti lagoons and beaches in the vicinity, that have killed numerous species of marine and bird life,” the municipality said in a statement.
“The pollution is considered serious and can affect one’s health if species are collected and consumed. Lagoon and seawater contact must be avoided.”
