Hydrogen fuel cells could prove promising
Companies are researching using hydrogen fuel cells for vessels as potential alternatives to implement greenhouse gas emissions.

Many companies are developing alternative fuel technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells, cutting potential greenhouse gas emissions.
Global Energy Venture, an Australian company, recently announced it is entering into a two-year-long project with Ballard Power Systems, in Canada, to develop a state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cell system for a proposed large scale ocean-going compressed hydrogen transport ship.
The design concept focuses on the need to transport up to 2,000 tons of compressed hydrogen gas at 250 bar.
Global Energy Ventures expects the ship, at scale, to have a power requirement of 26 MW.
A smaller pilot ship, with a power requirement of 10 MW, is also in development.
The Maritime Executive reports that Ballard will lead the development of the fuel cell system design.
They will assist Global Energy Ventures and integrate the system into the compressed hydrogen ship’s primary structure.
