World’s First Emission Free Autonomous Container Ship Completes Voyage

The Yara Birkeland, the world’s first zero emissions autonomous container ship vessel built and developed by Kongsberg and Vard for an estimated $15.2m has just returned to Oslo, Norway from its maiden voyage to Yara International in Horten.

Yara Birkeland will now conduct tests for the next 2 years on its technology before the autonomous containership can become fully certified.

Yara’s CEO stated, “We are proud to be able to showcase the world’s first fully electric and self-propelled container ship. It will cut 1,000 tonnes of CO2 and replace 40,000 trips by diesel-powered trucks a year,”
