Crew retreat to citadel after Greek container ship comes under attack
Communications lost during attack on Contships vessel in the Gulf of Guinea.
Piracy reporting bodies say the 2007-built, Cyprus-flagged, 1,100-teu Contship New came under attack in the Gulf of Guinea on Friday. The vessel was approached by gunmen while 230nm SW of Bonny, Nigeria.
The ship’s manager, Contships, told Trade Winds that the last contact with the vessel’s master came when he notified the company of the approach of a small boat carrying armed men at 1003 UTC.
“At that time, all crew members apart from the captain, the third officer and one AB were in the citadel,” the company added.
“Following the call from the captain, it is believed that he and the rest of the crew assembled in the citadel. Since then, we have had no communication with the vessel.”
