RNLI rescues crew and fishing vessel off Cornwall
Six crew members of the fishing boat, Ocean Pride, have been rescued by the RNLI after their vessel started taking on water off Pothcurno.
The crew of a Cornish fishing vessel, the Ocean Pride, were rescued by the RNLI on Friday afternoon. The fishing vessel made a pan-pan call after their boat started taking on water through her stern tube, but the rate of water ingress was too fast for her pumps to handle.
With the situation becoming critical, HM Coastguard paged the crew of the Penlee lifeboat, Volunteer Spirit. The RNLI boat was launched within eight minutes of receiving the call and arrived alongside Ocean Pride at around 1645 hours. A small container ship, Mirror, had also heard the call and was standing by in case further assistance was needed.
A tow was made up between the rescue vessel and Ocean Pride, and a salvage pump was started that just managed to keep up with the flooding. Another pump was delivered from an HMCG helicopter. Ocean Pride was later delivered at high water to a repair facility.
“A huge thank you . . . I can’t and won’t ever be able to thank you guys enough for bringing our boys safely home,” said Tamarra Laity, a member of one of the Ocean Pride crew’s families. “Not only that but staying with them and helping them to make safe and secure our [vessel].”
