The port city of Plymouth has experienced a sharp increase in Corona cases over Christmas and says they are due, in part, to cases reported from HMS Northumberland. Based at Davenport naval base, the Royal Navy’s submarine hunter had to abandon its scheduled mission to patrol UK waters on 23rd December, reports the Plymouth Herald.
A Royal Navy spokesman said: “Following a number of suspected Covid cases onboard HMS Northumberland, the crew are now following health guidelines and protocols to isolate.” He added: “The Royal Navy continues to meet all operational tasks over Christmas, as it has done throughout this pandemic.”
Several Royal Navy ships have reported cases in recent months, including HMS Albion, HMS Westminster, and HMS Raleigh and any depletion of the RN’s capability could add to the challenges the UK currently faces regarding illegal immigration, fishing and border security.
