Outbreak: Covid-19 cases on Hapag-Lloyd and HMM vessels in US
Hapag-Lloyd has confirmed an outbreak of Coronavirus on two vessels under its control.
Hapag-Lloyd has confirmed two cases of Covid-19 on one of its ships and on one belonging to The Alliance partner HMM.
The company said a crew member had tested positive for the virus aboard the 2010-built, 8,600-teu Sofia Express while in the port of Tacoma. The crew member was isolated ashore and full sanitisation of the vessel was conducted.
The US Centre for Disease Control and the USCG then gave clearance for the vessel to clear Tacoma.
“Regretfully the vessel berthing at Vancouver will be delayed pending clearance from Canadian health authorities and quarantine requirements before being allowed to proceed to GCT Deltaport for cargo operations,” Hapag-Lloyd said.
The second case was recorded aboard the 2016-built, 10,000-teu Hyundai Saturn, prior to the vessel leaving Los Angeles earlier this month. Again, the crewmember was isolated and full sanitisation measures implemented.
Hapag-Lloyd said the vessel would leave Los Angeles only when it had completed the mandatory 14-day quarantine and secured the necessary approval by the relevant authorities.
The company said, “Please be assured that we continue to do our utmost to safeguard health and well-being of our seafarers during the pandemic.”
