The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has thrown light on the unpredictability with which medical emergencies can arise rather rapidly.

Norway-based shipbuilding enterprise Ulstein reports on its range of ESVs or Emergency Support Vessels that can help cope up with all such emergency situations. They include:

  • A hospital ship equipped with the ability to provide first aid promptly.
  • An ESV that remains on standby whenever disaster or an emergency strike.
  • A platform supply vessel that can rapidly mobilize medical assistance on its weather deck.

In essence, these can be looked at as hospital vessels or ships where a wide range of medical emergencies can be attended to.

There are a total of five kinds of ESVs which the company has come up with to date.

Besides the ability to perform a wide range of emergency operations, these vessels also function as back-up for a variety of contingencies that may arise unexpectedly.

While medical emergencies are the foremost requirements, there are other situations including but not limited to natural disasters as well as manmade occurrences which seek the services of these ESVs.
