RWE: Hydrogen will help the maritime industries decarbonize
The German utility told CNBC that the use of hydrogen is likely to decarbonize and improve emissions neutrality.

ESSEN — Germany utility giant RWE AG believes that hydrogen will help maritime industries meet its emissions neutrality goals. The incoming chief executive officer of RWE, Markus Krebber, told CNBC that hydrogen is “definitely one of our long-term growth areas.”
“What makes us so optimistic is that, currently, hydrogen is the only technical solution to decarbonize parts of … energy-intensive industry, aviation, maritime, but also heavy-duty transportation,” Krebber said, adding that his company was “very well placed to play a very relevant role.”
The International Energy Agency (IEA) views hydrogen as a clean renewable. Hydrogen “can also help to improve air quality in cities and improve energy security” and views “hydrogen is mainly used in the refining and chemical sectors and produced from fossils.”
The Essen-based utility is multinational and is a billion-dollar enterprise. It also leads the world in offshore.
