New Zealand’s Port of Tauranga is running at 50% capacity due to a Covid-19 scare caused by a visiting containership.

The port authority said it will only be able to restore full operations when stevedores and other frontline workers have been tested for coronavirus.

The vessel that caused the scare is the 5,905-teu boxship, Rio de la Plata, which has at least 11 positive cases on board.

Local public health officials advised workers at the port to “go home and isolate while awaiting further instructions”.

“We have not received any official information from the ministry of health but have been advised informally that 109 negative tests have been received so far in this round of urgent testing,” the Port of Tauranga said.
