Final clean up of Wakashio wreck postponed till next month

Dismantling operation off Mauritius hampered by adverse weather conditions.
The dismantling of the last section of the MV Wakashio, aground on the Pointe-d’Esny reef off Mauritius, has been impeded by heavy weather and delayed until September, local authorities have announced.
Authorities have ordered the tugs Crest Mercury 3 and Independence to leave Tamarin Bay where they are sheltering and return to harbour at Port-Louis, where they will wait for a break in the weather, along with the barges Hong Bang 6 and Olympic Kapuas.
The Wakashio hit the headlines in July when it went aground on the Pointe-d’Esny reef after closing the shore in order to pick up a mobile phone signal so that crew could contact relatives. The resulting oil spill was the worst environmental disaster in Mauritius’ history.
