DNV supports Hapag-Lloyd’s milestone green financing
In an announcement yesterday, DNV, said it has helped container line, Hapag-Lloyd, secure financing for six new green boxships.
DNV says it has supported container line, Hapag-Lloyd, in securing financing for six highly efficient new container ships. The proposed newbuilds fulfil the requirements of the Green Loan Principles of the Loan Market Association.
With decarbonisation the challenge of coming decades, DNV says pressure from regulators, financiers, customers, and the general public is driving efforts to reduce carbon emissions around the globe. As a trusted maritime partner, the company says it is rising to the challenge and is helping customers meet their stated environmental goals.
This new transaction pertains to six ultra-large 23,500 TEU container ships which were ordered in December 2020. In a press statement, Hapag-Lloyd’s Chief Financial Officer, Mark Frese, said:
“Our first green financings are a major milestone for us, as we are breaking new ground in the container shipping segment by financing newbuilding projects geared towards sustainability… The transactions will help us to modernise our fleet while further reducing our CO2 footprint at the same time…”
And Shaun Walden, Project Director, Sustainability and ESG Services at DNV, said: “We were very pleased to have been asked by Hapag-Lloyd to offer our independent expertise to assess whether the vessels meet the Green Loan criteria… This is a ground-breaking deal that shows that the industry can move towards greater sustainability hand-in-hand with improved commercial performance of the asset.”
