Durban’s dockers refuse to unload Israeli-chartered vessel
Israeli-chartered vessel boycotted by South Africa’s Trade and Allied Workers Union.
Members of the South African Trade and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) are refusing to unload the Israeli-chartered, 4,992-teu Zim Shanghai out of sympathy for Palestinian victims of Israeli airstrikes.
The 2002-built, Costamare-owned vessel docked in Durban on Thursday after arriving from Singapore. Anele Kiet, the union’s deputy general secretary said there would be lunchtime pickets in solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
“Satawu members who work in the Durban port need to boycott the shipment. Indeed we have contacted our members at the Durban port, who have confirmed they will not be offloading the shipment,” Kiet added.
