First Ever “University at Sea” Sets Sail
“University at Sea” Will Unite Students Worldwide
Launched by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in August 2020, and calling it the “University at Sea” the goal of the One Ocean Expedition is to unite students, scientists, leaders and people all over the world.
The expedition called One Ocean, will begin on August 20, 2021, and end in April 2023. The Stratraad Lehmkuhl will travel more than 55,000 nautical miles and visit over 36 ports in various parts of the world. Reports from the ship will be periodically sent to different higher education institutes and colleges.
The research team will take part in open activities and meetings at each port of call, so that they may present their findings and forge new relationships. It’s said that the ship will be utilized for conferences, high-level meetings, and corporate hospitality.
The expedition’s website states that its major purpose is to “raise awareness and education about the ocean’s critical role in global sustainable development”.
On April 15, 2023, the voyage will culminate in Bergen with an international week of marine research courses, conferences, and workshops.
