Powerful May gales sweeping across Britain have helped the wind-power industry set a new record for electricity production.

The record was set in the early hours of Friday morning, with wind providing two-thirds of the UK’s energy needs according to data from the National Grid.

There were several periods between 10pm on Thursday night and Friday morning when wind was contributing more than 60% for the first time.

The last wind-power milestone was when Storm Bella brought gusts of up to 100mph and wind provided 50.7% of the country’s electricity needs.

Independent climate thinktank, Ember, said the UK’s renewable energy outpaced its fossil fuel production for the first time last year and could remain the largest source of electricity in the future.
