As per a Corporate Announcement from Ørsted, the terms of an agreement with Amazon means the latter partaking in 250MW from Ørsted’s upcoming 900MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. Such a purchase is in line with Amazon’s goal of being a 100% renewable entity by 2030, which in turn would pave the way towards the ultimate goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The two companies have signed similar agreements in the past as well. 2016 saw them signing an agreement for a 253MW Onshore Wind Farm in the State of Texas in the United States.

– We are proud to work with Ørsted on Amazon’s first offshore wind CPPA, Europe’s largest with 250MW of renewable energy, Director of Amazon Energy, Nat Sahlstrom, said.

Rasmus Errboe, Senior Vice President, Head of Region Continental Europe at Ørsted Offshore and responsible for Corporate PPAs, reciprocated his pleasure on the development, stating:

– We applaud Amazon’s leadership in corporate renewable energy investments which helps drive the green energy transformation forward.

The agreement is also expected to take Germany closer to its goal of making a green transition, thanks to the supply of clean electricity.

With this agreement, the last 12 months have seen Ørsted signing CPPAs for a total capacity of 1,301MW across its worldwide portfolio of offshore wind farms.
