More Countries Join IMO in Calling for Seafarers to be Classed as Key Workers

IMO Secretary-General, Kitack Lim calls on member states who have not yet taken action to do so as a matter of urgency

Key-worker designation now upheld by forty-five member states and one associate member, but more needs to be done, said the IMO yesterday in a circular letter.

The designation is essential to avoid Covid-related travel restrictions for mariners and the dire situation many have endured aboard ship this year without much-needed crew changes or leave to go ashore.

The new resolutions have been adopted by the IMO, United Nations General Assembly, and the International Labour Organisation. A video, Standing Up for Seafarers, that highlights the difficulties experienced by crews can be seen here:
