Extension of Furlough Scheme into New Year Needed as Demand Predicted to be Low in 2021

In a press release today, the Swedish government announced the continuation of the temporary furlough plan it started in July.

The plan has now been sent to the EU for ratification and is expected to be extended from 1st January to 30th June.

It provides much-needed financial support for ferry crews that have suffered loss of earnings due to cancelled ferry crossings and aid for ferry lines. As a nation with so many islands and so dependent upon water traffic, the news has been welcomed throughout the industry.

Svensk Sjöfart describes the extension as: “Breathing room for several Swedish ferry lines.”
